Ben Franklin Quotation

Did you ask them for safety?
Did you ask them the price?
Did they think their own
private ideas would suffice?
Did you say it's okay?
Do you feel you agreed?
Did they simply decide
that they knew what you need?
They think, don't you see,
that they're quite justified
and the things that they want
they should not be denied.
But I don't think they asked you
(they didn't ask me)
if the bargain was worth
trading safety for free.

They used to hate our freedom

I broke into your house
so you sealed the door
to make sure that I couldn't
try that any more.

I did it again
by smashing some panes;
you nailed up boards
to block my new gains.

I came down your chimney
to give you a scare
so you bricked it up tight,
learned to live without air.

Now you're safe in the dark,
all sealed and closed.
I have what I wanted;
not what you supposed.
